Chloroquine is the generic form of the brand-name prescription medicine Aralen, which is used to prevent and treat malaria — a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite — and to treat amebiasis, an infection of the intestines caused by a parasite. Chloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. Chloroquine is used extensively in malaria endemic areas in Africa to treat the uncomplicated form of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. However, the efficiency of chloroquine has been severely impacted by the recent development of chloroquine resistant plasmodium falciparum parasites.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

Does anyone have an itchy scalp from hydroxychloroquin or plaquenil. I started on Plaquenil this Jan2014 but my itching scalp problem started in 2012. The same time when early signs of SLE started too. Recently, while getting my hair washed by a hair stylist, who had earlier commented I had major scalp problem, I googled and read that for chronic illness patients, bad scalp and dandruff condition is a norm.
