My ophthalmologist started me at six month checks but after the third one she said we could go to annually if I preferred. I opted to stay at six months to err on the side of caution, but others go annually. Side effects include irritability, headache, weakness, hair lightening or loss, stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, muscle pain, rash and itching. Rarely, hydroxychloroquine can affect the bone marrow leading to reduced white blood cells leukopenia or platelets thrombocytopenia and abnormal red blood cells anemia.

    For all uses of Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine): WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

I did stop it for 2 weeks early in the treatment due to having to take a coupld other drugs that seemed to give me side effects. I just quit the plaquenil to give my liver a rest at that time. Noticed nothing different. Plaquenil isn a antiparasitic drug with anti-inflammatory affect.
