  1. Hydroxychloroquine for crest syndrome

The main finding in scleroderma is thickening and tightening of the skin and inflammation and scarring of many body parts, leading to problems in the lungs, kidneys, heart, intestinal system and other areas. Twins and family members of those with scleroderma or other autoimmune connective tissue diseases, such as lupus, may have a slightly higher risk of getting scleroderma. There is still no cure for scleroderma, but effective treatments for some forms of the disease are available. Children can also develop scleroderma, but the disease is different in children than in adults.

Mar 17, 2019 Hydroxychloroquine is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Important information. Taking hydroxychloroquine long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye. The cause isn’t known, but CREST syndrome limited scleroderma is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, in which your immune system turns against your body. The immune system in people with CREST syndrome appears to stimulate cells called fibroblasts to produce excess amounts of collagen, a key component of connective tissue. Because no two cases of Scleroderma are alike, identifying your disease subtype, stage, and involved organs is very important in determining the best course of action for treatment. Current therapies use medications that focus on the four main features of the disease inflammation, autoimmunity, vascular disease, and tissue fibrosis.

A great deal of research is also underway to find better treatments for scleroderma and, hopefully, someday a cure. Although the underlying cause is unknown, promising research is shedding light on the relationship between the immune system and scleroderma.

  9. Plaquenil - To get a Lupus diganosis you need to have 4 or more of 11 Lupus criteria, within a 5 year period. A lot of people have less than 4, or as in my case, more than 4 but spread out over much more than 5 years. So it's very possible for plaquenil to do good without you being considered to have Lupus.
