I started on Plaquenil in 2015 200 mg then increased to 400 mg after 3 months. It took many months for the ulcer like spots to go away but the drug works. In January 2018, I no longer had insurance so I dropped back down to 200 mg. Last week my doc added plaquenil to the mix. I have a pharmacist friend that says it can take up to a year to work, but once its kicks in it can be really good. I suggest you ask your rhuemie for additional help in the meantime. I have had RA going on 12 years, and originally way back when I ws given plaquenil alone and it did nothing. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

  3. For me it did not start so quickly. You need to build a therapeutic level for any real benefit. Sometimes that is how Sjogren's works. Symptoms seem to disappear for a few days and reappear. Plaquenil eventually helped my joint pain. The continued fatigue and other symptoms are related to my mctd so I am not the perfect judge for this.

It began to work in 3 weeks and within 6 months my inflammation had gone from over 40 to 5.5. And I only took 200mg every other day! How does Plaquenil work? Plaquenil changes the way your immune system works. In some kinds of lupus, your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. Plaquenil tries to quiet or slow down the immune system. How do you take Plaquenil? You take Plaquenil as a pill 1 or 2 times a day. Take the pills with food or milk.
