    I was dx in August with Lupus and my Rheumy said she was afraid to start me on Plaquenil since I had a bad reaction to a Sulfa antibiotic I took and the same reaction when a Dr gave me Lasix. I read that the sulfa in Plaquenil is different from those in antibiotics and most people with Lupus have an allergy to Sulfa but can take Plaquenil. Medications that are known to cause tinnitus or hearing loss are considered “ototoxic medications.” Discontinuing these medications can prevent tinnitus and hearing loss progression, though the ringing may not always go away. Check with your doctor before stopping the use of any medication. I have just spent my first month off my Plaquenil after over 15 years. My doctor is concerned about my retinas, no change yet, but my total use has been 1400 grams. The second week I was off, I developed shingles, caught it, took the medication and it went away. I also have been on methotrexate.4 ml/week.

  3. They told me that plaquenil can cause it, but he did not think that it was that. So, anyway, after my appt. they determined that I have severe high frequency hearing loss and that is what is causing the ringing in my ears. If I had said something before they might have been able to help me more, but now there isn't anything that can be done.

    My rheumatologist took me off plaquenil 2 years ago; I still take 400 mg of ibuprofen 2X/week. I still get flares once or twice a year, but they are not as bad.6, as opposed to a 10, on the pain scale. Tinnitus started a few weeks after I started plaquenil & I still have it.
