Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil was originally used to treat malaria and is now used mostly to treat rheumatological and dermatological diseases. Its most frequent use now is for Rheumatoid Arthritis RA and Lupus and is often very effective in mitigating the joint and arthritic symptoms these diseases can cause. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Plaquenil is a prescription medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration FDA to treat inflammation associated with lupus in people whose symptoms have not responded to drugs with lower risk for side effects. Plaquenil is also known by its drug name, Hydroxychloroquine.

I really havent had much luck or help with anyone Docs telling me any good answers on what plaquenil does for anything. So far I still hurt but don't have the problems with cold or heat. I have Lupus and i seem to be in less pain when taking plaquenil than without it. I love heavy tights or support hose for extra warmth on ankles and legs. I also have lupus but my rhumetologist put me on hydroxyquine (200mg) twice a day.

Three anti-malarial drugs are prescribed for lupus symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the most commonly prescribed because it is generally believed to cause fewer side effects; chloroquine Aralen has a reputation for more serious side effects, but it may be prescribed in situations where hydroxychloroquine cannot be used. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth. Plaquenil is used to keep this autoimmune disease at a less active phase- it is not just for joint pains and discoid It helps to also keep the flares less severe - unsure how it works they just know that it does. My lupus affects major body systems and joint pains have not been a big problem for me but it keeps the disease activity at a lower level so less other drugs such as prednisone are needed.
